In my sculpture class, one of our assignments was to sew an object into a pouch. For my object, I decided to use a piece of fruit. The main decision I had to make was which fruit would be the best choice. Many were too round and wouldn’t have given interest to the final form. I decided to choose a banana because the form was something distinguished. It also provided a comedic element and I felt the fibrous peel related more to the fabric. I chose to use white fabric for several reasons. The white fabric presented an idealistic pure form but also provided a strange contrast when it started to decay. It also had that impression of something wrapped in cloth after it died– and had a dark humor to it. I documented the changes over 2 weeks and was able to treat it more like performative artwork.
